Levi
Suddenly a shriek pierced the air. I jumped in surprise and dropped the heavy stone straight onto my foot. I swore loudly, jumping up on one foot and cradling the other until I lost my balance and tumbled over, swearing again. I looked in the direction of the shriek and realized that it had to have come from Zayna. My eyes widened a little bit as I instantly started thinking of the worst possible scenarios she could be in. I got back up, limping slightly for the first few steps as I started to run to where I thought she was. I slid down a gravely part of the sloping mountainside and spotted only the top of Zayna's head far below me on another hill. I started to run towards her.
"Zayna!" I shouted, hoping for some kind of reply when I noticed a huge gap right in front of me that seemed to open up and plummet several feet to the ground below. At the last moment I hoped for the best and leaped. I was surprised to make it to the other side, landing on both feet. I let out a small sigh of relief and paused briefly to glance behind me. When I turned back around I jogged the last of the distance to Zayna where I finally saw her whole body when I topped a small hilltop.
"Hey!" I called out to her. Looking around at eye-level I didn't see anything around that could have cause her screaming; there were no guards or bears or anything. "What's wrong?"

Zayna
“AAAAAAGH!” I shrieked, feeling my blood curl in my body. I froze, unable to move as the creature slowly slid further up my ankle. Far away, I barely heard someone, Levi, yell my name.
I opened my mouth to reply but no sound came out. I heard the pounding of feet, way out in the distance, then slowly coming closer to me. I eyed the snake in pure fear, whimpering a little as it began to wrap itself around my calf. I heard a grunt, then a sigh before a voice reached me.
“Hey!” Levi called out to me, sounding freaked out. “What’s wrong?” I bit my lip, and glanced up at me. He was looking at me with wide eyes as he walked towards me in concern. Unable to speak, I pointed down to my legs, squeezing my eyes shut as I felt the snake reach my knee.

Zayna didn't answer, her lip just quivered as she looked at me with fear and pointed down. She squeezed her eyes shut as I looked at her leg where a snake was circling it's way around her calve. I gaped for a moment in total shock and then stepped right next to her.
"Don't freak out. . . " I quietly told her very seriously. I reached down slowly beside her leg, kneeling and holding my fingers out to grip the snake as it slid over my palm. I breathed in deeply as it's scaly body tensely traveled across my bare flesh.

Levi stood there for a second, wide eyed.
“Don’t freak out,” he murmured seriously. I held my breath as I watched him kneel down slowly, eyeing the creature. He held his hand towards it then gripped it tightly as it slithered onto his bare skin. I stepped back and shivered in disgust as he let it wrap around his arm.
“Are you crazy?” I asked him, wide eyed. “That thing could be poisonous for all you know!”

The snake made it way around my arm and off of Zayna's leg, which she yanked away immediately. She looked at me in sheer disbelief.
"Are you crazy? That thing could be poisonous for all you know!" She exclaimed. I placed my other hand on my shoulder palm-up to keep the snake from getting near my face. I watched it's red and white body slide up my arm like it was a tree branch or something.
"Naw, it's just a milksnake, but it's about to be dinner. Uh, you might not want to watch this next part." I suggested as the snakes head slithered into my grasp. I clamped my hand shut around it tighter than a bear trap and ripped it off of my arm. I threw it down at my feet and then forced the bottom of my boot onto it's head as it tried to lash out in defense. Lucky for me, my boot won, and I heard a loud crunch against the rocky ground we were standing on. I stepped back and watched a dark pool of blood stream out into the gravel. I sneered and raised my eyebrows at the now-dead snake. "Sorry little guy."

“Naw, it’s just a milksnake. But it’s about to be dinner,” he told me in amusement. He glanced up at me for a second then said, “Uhm you may not want to watch this next part though.”
Ignoring his warning, I watched as he clamped his hand around the snake’s head firmly before throwing it down underneath his boot. I looked on, my nose wrinkling in disgust, as the snake wriggled feverously in an attempt to escape. Unfortunately for it, Levi’s boot was a strong opponent as he applied weight to his foot. I stuck out my tongue and fake gagged as I heard the sickening crunch of bone. A moment later, the snake became still and Levi stepped back, allowing us both to watch a small stream of dark blood travel from the snake’s disfigured face.
“Sorry little guy,” Levi said quietly. I looked at him for a moment, surprised at his remark and the sincerity of his tone. I wasn’t sure if he felt bad or not so I decided not to mention his comment. Instead I cleared my throat and waited for him to look up at me.
“So.. That was really disturbing Levi. Brutal much?” I joked.

Zayna looked up at me for a moment, and I wasn't sure what she was staring for but a moment later she cleared her throat and waited for me to give her my attention.
"So. . . That was really disturbing, Levi. Brutal much?" She joked. I put my hand on the back of my neck and chuckled, looking away sheepishly.
"Well, the whole 'let's set up a trap' thing wasn't working so well, so, um, yeah. . . I figured a little brutality might as well score us a meal." I replied earnestly.

“Good! Because I’m starving. Plus, the less snakes on this planet, the better!” I muttered, shivering just at the thought of them.

Zayna laughed and rubbed her hand over her face.
"Good!Because I'm starving. Plus, the less snakes on this planet, the better!" She muttered, shivering in disgust. I picked the snake up by the end of the tail and made an excessively pouty face at her.
"Hey," I said like she'd offended me. "I like snakes. Look at how cuddly he is!" I dangled it near her as it's body twisted with it's after-death muscle spams.

“Hey,” he said, sounding offended. “I like snakes. Look at how cuddly it is!” With that he shoved it towards me, dangling it in front of my face. I let out a high pitched squeal and ran backwards, my arms wielding in front of me like a master ninja warrior.
“Keep that thing away from me!” I warned, my eyes shooting daggers at him.

She let out a high-pitched squeal and started running away, wielding her arms like a shield in front of her.
"Keep that things away from me!" She warned, shooting me a glare that could injure someone. I took a small stepp toward her, still jiggling the snake.
"Aw, but he wants to be your friend!" I told her, sticking out my bottom lip and sniffling in pretend sorrow.

“Take one more step and you’ll end up just like that snake!” I threatened.

She glared at me, clearly not amused.
"Take one more step and you'll end up just like that snake!" She threatened, her eyes flitting towards it's carcass in my hand. I raised my eyebrows at her for a moment and then snickered and looked away.
"Fine, I'm done." I give in with a small grin.

“Take one more step and you’ll end up just like that snake!” I threatened. He raised his eyebrows at me for a second then glanced away with a smirk on his face.
“Fine, I’m done,” he stated. I pursed my lips for a moment, making sure he was serious.
“Good,” I finally responded. I turned around and began breaking off branches from the bushes, praying there were no more little surprises in there. “Now help me get this firewood so you can cook me some dinner!” I teased.

Zayna pursed her lips and studied me for a moment before deciding I was serious.
"Good," she finally responded. She turned around and began breaking of branches of the bushes. "Now help me get this firewood so you can cook me some dinner!" She teased. I smiled and shook my head at her, setting down the snake to stand next to her. I broke off part of the bush and muttered under my breath sarcastically.
"Sure thing, princess."
