I gave her answer a short laugh. "I guess that makes sense." I told her honestly. "But what they told me was that this stuff is basically synthetic life. They call it darkness because that's what it looks like. The wisps are like, independent forms of that stuff and they have a way to control it and basically this is a weapon test-run on it or something. And, of course, we're the lucky lab-rats." I said, the last part laced with bitter sarcasm. I looked at my hand, which was bleeding but noticed something else. Where the blood was coming out I could see what looked like black mist floating up out of it and disappearing into the air. I frowned and looked closer intently. "And it looks like it's spreading faster than I thought..."

I frowned and looked down at my stomach and hand. Red, gooey liquid stuck to them and every few seconds black darkness rose from it and disappeared, just like I had seen with Levi.
“What happens when it spreads all throughout us?” I asked worriedly.

"It'll 'fail to sustain us'." I said, mimicking Nixon's voice with an added sense of doom. I bit my lip for a moment. "So, I can't imagine anything good will happen at that point."

"I don't know, but I really don't wanna find out. That's why we have to figure out how to get out of this mess. And I'd say sooner rather than later. Whatever we're gonna do we have to do it fast." I tell her, feeling urgency taking over every other emotion I'd previously been feeling.

I nodded my head in agreement and opened my mouth to reply but stopped when I suddenly heard heavy footsteps crunching in the newly fallen snow.
"What now?!" I moaned in aggravation. "Can't we just catch a break for once?!"

"Shh!" I hushed her quickly, dashing over to her side and grabbing her arm. "It's gotta be the guards." I whispered, backing away from the entrance where they could be coming in any second. There was no way we'd be able to make a mad dash out. We were about to be in a lot of trouble.

I bit my lip and looked around. If we could hear the guards’ footsteps, that meant they were close.. There was no way we'd be able to make it out the front of the cave
“We have to climb up,” I whispered back to Levi. “That’s our only chance. Otherwise we’ll be trapped in here and they’ll have the advantage.”

"Alright, let's do it then." I said, feeling all of my fight coming back. It was time to jump into action. I quickly looked around for anything that could help me in a fight and I spotted a jagged rock that was a little bit bigger than my hand. I picked it up and then started pulling Zayna backward, further into the cave with me, not taking my eyes off the entrance.

Levi tugged at my arm, pulling me further back into the cave with him. When we stopped, I picked up a few oval shaped rocks and put them in my pockets, ready to throw them since I was an ace at targets and that was the only way I could protect myself since I didn’t trust my fighting skills.
As I straightened back up, pain seared through my stomach and I realized the bleeding hadn’t ceased. I grimaced to myself but stayed quiet, waiting for something to happen.

I turned behind me, looking to see where the cave went. I could see the moonlight pouring in from some cracks coming in from above. There were a couple of opening that looked just big enough to squeeze though. I smiled, feeling a plan coming on. I started whispering to Zayna as I pointed to it. "Look back there. We can climb out of there and pull a sneak attack."

I walked underneath it and saw the dim light of winter streaming through. It barely looked big enough for Levi to squeeze through.
“Good idea,” I whispered back. I grabbed onto a foothold, ready to pull myself up, but a split second after I strained my stomach muscles I fell back to the ground, hunching over as I squeezed my eyes shut and held in a scream.

I looked up at him with a pained expression and slowly nodded, pulling my shirt up to reveal my wound. In an instant, he was kneeling by me, his gentle hands hovering above the cut examining it.

She looked at me with pain in her eyes and nodded hesitantly, lifting her shirt up to reveal her wound. I dropped beside her, examining the cut. It looked deep- definitely too deep for her to be stretching out to climb out of the cave and get into a fight. She wouldn't stand a chance... "This is worse than I thought." I told her, pursing my lips and thinking for a moment. "Zayna, I want you to hide back here. Don't make a sound and don't move until I tell you okay?" I helped her up and got her behind the curves in the cave to a little crevice. "You'll be safe here. I won't let them get to you, I promise." I looked at her with a conflicted expression but as the footsteps got closer I could hear the voices belonging to them. I gripped my rock tightly and then started to climb out of the opening, feeling adrenaline spreading throughout my body.
